We are Nonprofit of the Year!

Cypress-based Shots for Holly Inc. is proud to announce the organization has received the 2017 Nonprofit of the Year from the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce.

“We are so honored to receive this award,” said Dr. Michelle Becker, President and Founder of the organization. “We were completely surprised.”

Each year, approximately 50,000 people die of flu-related complications, such as pneumonia, and inflammation of the heart and brain, just to name a few.

“It’s our goal to educate the community about the importance of the flu shot,” Becker said. “There is a lot of information out there, questioning the effectiveness of the shot. Even though it’s not made to prevent the flu, it will reduce the severity of the symptoms. And, if you do contract the flu, you are likely to be sick for a shorter period of time.”

It’s most commonly thought that complications from flu are more prevalent in the young or seniors, but that’s just not the case anymore.

“This year, the flu strains have been particularly bad,” Becker said. “It’s hitting people in every age bracket. We’ve been working with our partner clinics to help facilitate flu shot clinics in the community and educate folks about the importance of the flu shot.”

Flu season is expected to continue through May.

“Even though it’s late in the season, it’s not too late to get your shot,” Becker said.

Leslie Martone, president of the CyFair Chamber of Commerce said, “We love celebrating with our businesses and Non-Profits as they are awarded the Business of the Year award.  It is so well deserved for an amazing organization like Shots for Holly! Congratulations for your entire board and volunteers!”

The 501©3 charity has a fundraiser slated for springtime.

“We’d like to invite everyone in the community to join us on April 22 at TopGolf in West Houston for our 5th annual Holly on the Range event,” Becker said. “It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we need your help in our mission to beat the beast known as the flu, one shot at a time!”
